Veteran Benefits Planning in Cleveland, Ohio

Before we get into this week's blog, we at Richard A. Myers Jr. and Associates want to personally thank all of our veterans and their family members for their service and sacrifices to our country.

We have been very blessed to be able to help these veterans and their families by helping them with their veteran benefits planning.

Two Main Types of Veteran Benefits:

Service Connected Disability-

Veterans or their spouse over the age of 65 who are permanently disabled may be eligible for veterans benefits such as monetary support to help finance their living and care expenses.

Enhanced Pension-

Also known as Aid and Attendance benefits, Enhanced Pension benefits is another support program to help veterans and their families. There are two things we need to establish:

  • Is the individual a wartime veteran? (90 days of active duty, at least 1 day during an active war)
  • Can we establish a care need from a medical doctor?

This is a reimbursement program, so it does require some out of pocket expenses; however, the government will reimburse several thousand dollars a month to help defer some of these expenses for veterans.

Changes in Veteran Benefits as of 2018

  • Asset limit increase in 2018
    • Needs to be adjusted annually
    • Currently an asset base of $ 127,000
  • 3-year Lookback
    • We try to calculate ways to best accelerate eligibility. Then we'll file an application and work through that application process to help veterans get the benefits that they need and earned.
